Understanding Diplomatic Negotiations
Recent discussions over Ukraine have bought into sharp focus the differences between diplomatic negotiation and the transactional deal-based approach favoured by President Trump. Although von Clausewitz may have been right to suggest that ‘war is a continuation of politics by other means”, that does not mean those most willing to coerce using military and economic power will necessarily win the day. Strength and weakness in negotiation are relative terms and can change as a negotiation proceeds. Negotiators’ personal skills can be highly relevant in diplomatic activity.
This workshop is designed to help those in the private sector understand how diplomatic negotiation works and how good intergovernmental outcomes may differ from commercial transactions. It will explore different ne-gotiation paradigms, from classic Great Power diplomacy to globalized discussions based on international insti-tutions and a rules-based international order. And it will examine the influence of multinational companies on governments, and their ability to act. Participants will gain a better understanding of What is Going On and how to protect the interests of their organizations in a time of growing international uncertainty.
